Rocky Point, Mexico or Puerto Peñasco nestled in the Sonoran desert, has been a popular vacation destination for decades. It has recently come into its own as a luxury resort town and an alternative for retirement. Rocky Point, Mexico is family friendly and caters to both the budget-minded tourists and those looking for a more luxurious get-a-way.

Traveling in Sonora (Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point Mexico) has never been easier. The government of Sonora changed the way visitors can enter the country to make it fast and easy with no hassles. All you need is a passport or drivers license for identification. If you're driving you will only need to fill our a form. That's it!

Geography

Rocky Point is surrounded by the Sonoran Desert on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other. A fascinating and extraordinary characteristic of the Puerto Peñasco area is the extreme tides produced in Cholla Bay, just five (5) miles from the heart of Rocky Point. The difference between low and high tides can be as much as 24 feet. Nearby is Mount Pinacate, home of nine major volcanic craters and more than 400 volcanic vents.

Currency: Pesos, although everyone will take American dollars. Not all restaurants or shopkeepers take credit cards.

Fishing in Rocky Point

Fishing permits are required for everyone in any boat where even one person is fishing. Exception: those under 12 do not need a permit if accompanied by an adult permitted fisherman. Catches can not be sold or exchanged and each person can only take 11 pounds of fish from Mexico per trip. All boats in Mexican waters need a valid permit.
